This album, originally out on CD in 2001 by Rough Trade, was Jeff’s debut full- length. It was an instant classic when it came out—filled with Jeff’s self-doubt, sense of humor, and New York City-specific imagery on songs like “The East River” and “The Chelsea Hotel Oral Sex Song” (about an experience talking with a stranger about the Leonard Cohen song “Chelsea Hotel #2”). Rolling Stone called it “weird” and gave it 4 stars out of 5, NME called it “mind-blowing,” Will Oldham called it “impressive and inspiring and exciting,” New York Daily News named it Indie Album Of The Year when it came out, and Jens Lekman has stated that Jeff is the only artist he’s ever sent fanmail to.
